Do you have a superpower?
Now before you answer, let’s redefine the meaning of the word “superpower” a little.
A quick Google search says that superpower means an exceptional or extraordinary power or ability.
Now you can answer the question ~ what is your superpower?
What is that extraordinary element that differentiates you from others?
…
You know what I perceive to be a superpower in the modern world?
Living a non-judgmental life!
In a world which is very heavily dominated by judgments and preconceived notions, the ability to live a non-judgmental life could very much be your superpower.
Let’s unwind a little, shall we?
Last week, Apple released its Apple Vision Pro, an augmented reality device that works on spatial computing and allows you to take your work desk anywhere in the world.
Now you don’t need to understand the technicals of this. I’m not a tech person anyway.
But something that everybody will relate to is – How do you walk in these in public?
And probably this is the only image that will explain the insecurity people have towards wearing one of these devices:
Now sure, it may be a great device, it may ease up your work, and it may make everything ten times more convenient for you.
But most people are only worried about how other people around them are going to perceive them with one of these on their heads.
That’s my point!
What does it mean to live a non-judgemental life?
Does it mean letting go of preconceived notions about what is right or wrong, good or bad? Or does it involve approaching situations, people, and ideas with an open heart and mind, without immediately attaching labels or making assumptions based on personal biases?
Well, both!
But why do I put together the words “non-judgement” and “superpower” in the same sentence?
In a society where judgments are prevalent, the ability to live a non-judgmental life is indeed a superpower. This superpower empowers individuals to navigate the complexities of human interactions with empathy, understanding, and a willingness to embrace diversity. It allows for a more profound connection with others and promotes a harmonious coexistence, fostering a positive and inclusive social environment.
Most times, we involuntarily generate a perception of somebody in our minds.
“This person probably eats like that.”
“That person probably doesn’t care about nature”
“He/she must not value anything else above themselves”.
Even though most times a judgement is an involuntary action that stems from your surroundings or how you’ve grown up, it can quickly transform into something that will keep you from getting close to other people.
Constant judgments create a space where people don’t feel accepted in your domain.
These judgments often fuel conflicts too.
And while these “perceived notions” could have a detrimental effect on your and others’ lives, I’m here with the good news ~ to help you live a non-judgmental life ~ or at least realistically, take the first step.

Embracing a non-judgmental mindset encourages self-reflection. By letting go of preconceived notions, individuals become more aware of their own biases and can work towards personal growth and self-improvement.
But how can you achieve this mindset?
- Practice Mindfulness: Cultivate awareness of your thoughts and reactions. Mindfulness helps you catch and redirect judgmental thoughts, promoting a more conscious and open-minded approach to situations.
- Cultivate Empathy: Put yourself in others’ shoes. Developing empathy allows you to understand different perspectives and reduces the tendency to judge based on limited information.
- Challenge Assumptions: Actively question your assumptions and beliefs. By challenging your preconceived notions, you create space for a more nuanced and open-minded understanding of the world.
Living a non-judgmental life can significantly impact stress levels in various situations. By approaching challenges with an open mind, you can even reduce the emotional toll of stressful events.
Non-judgmental living allows for a more measured response to stressors, promoting resilience and emotional well-being.
